Local Strawberries
Went out yesterday to get some fresh local berries, and came home with two baskets full. Out came the canning equipment and about an hour later i was putting strawberry jam into jars. There were a few berries left from a basket so I sliced them up, put a little sugar on, and popped those beauties into my mouth. What an explosion of flavour!! You just can't beat our strawberries up here. In Florida they have an annual Strawberry Festival and there is a huge amount of hoopala - but in my opinion there isn't any flavour in those berries. Those poor folk need to taste our Norfolk County berries!!!!!

Re: Local Strawberries
back when "Norfolk farms" existed and even later when ownership had changed victoria area used to ship norfolk strawberry plants to florida.
but i think that no one ships plants to the south from this area any more !

Last I'd heard was Decarlos Farms - but that was quite a few years ago. I thought that the quality in Florida had improved during that time also, but like I said, that was quite a few years ago!

When I do my grocery shopping tomorrow, I will be on the lookout. It could be a week or two early for our area, but I'm willing to look (and eat)!

Re: Local Strawberries
My wife went to a local farm near us and picked 5 boxes yesterday for the 2nd time. Big delicious berries ... sliced in a bowl with cream and eaten. FANTASTIC!!
They sell by the lb. and work out to about $1.20 per quart. Sobeys this week have local berries for $4.25 per quart. Quite a savings to pick your own!! ..

I know what you mean gale force! My wife goes on her knees and picks what she wants but then has to find some help to get back up!!
They are delicious ... eating a few right now and she is gone to pick some more.
I think $4.25 is a bit much though ... $3.00 seems appropriate to me for retail stores, but what do I know? ...

Re: Local Strawberries
We have been buying them at Nightengales fruit stand in Delhi. Don't know the price but we don't bend that way anymore either

We found some in Peterborough today but didn't stop to buy any. Hubby was on a mission and it wasn't for strawberries.

Re: Local Strawberries
Well, I will have to get out this weekend and pick a couple of baskets. I pick ours on the 11th concession - just west of Turkey Point Road.
Yes, there is a HUGE savings in picking you own, but I also understand the bend/squat thing.

Rustee......would you maybe mind sharing where your wife went? I've been looking for somewhere to pick that has decent prices. I see the cost of local berries has gone down a bit in stores this week. We picked a quart up for $2.99 today. The first quarts we bought this year were $3.95 each.....which is a little steep for me.

Re: Local Strawberries
Hi catweb ... she went to Judds on Decou road. If you don't know where that is, it's the road that goes east only just out front of Tims in the Sobeys Plaza. It's only about 1 km down the road off 24 on the right (south) side. They have a stand out front, but you have to drive back in to get to the patch. She picked 5 boxes yesterday without hardly moving and in about 15 - 20 minutes. We live right behind Sobeys, so it's nice and close and we enjoy fresh strawberries almost every day. They sell by the pound, but it figures out to less than $1.25 per box.

Re: Local Strawberries
Judds have really delicious berries and even the baskets that are picked for you, (granted on the very expensive side) are all fantastic. There was not one rejected berry in the two baskets I got last week, and the baskets were heaped to the point that if any more went in, they would fall out!

Re: Local Strawberries
I would imagine where Rustee went would be Judd's strawberries on the Decou Rd about a km east of Sobey's.....I was there yesterday and picked about 6 qts in a little over 10 minutes...paid a total of $9.03 for them...great price , great berries, great picking......

Re: Local Strawberries
Got some strawberries today at Nightingales in Delhi. VERY sweet!
Is it being a good year - so far - for the berries? - A bit more rain than some years - and off and on heat?

Re: Local Strawberries
if someone wants to go for a bit of a drive to get berries, or see an old one room school or the new(er) 2 room one that replaced it(that is now a community centre)and see a fairly new damn, and park (35-40 years old).
you could take a cruise to 11 miles eastof cambridge,(old # 97 hiway)to valens.(6 or 7 miles from african lion safari) and just as you get there you will spot a sign that say's marcy's strawberries,i/4 miles on right !
we took our grand daughter with us on saturday to a family picnic/reunion there !
my grandaughter seen the sign and said someone is using our family's name for their business ! (she begged not to go as she felt she would be bored stiff spending a bit of time with all them old people she didn't know, she's 8 years old.)
so after telling her it was my cousins farm that had the strawberries (20 acres of pick your own,or just buy them) she started asking why she didn't know my(her) cousin.
and as we were the second carload to arrive, and the first with a youngster, she knew it would be a bad day ,and told us SO !
but that was about 1:30 and by 8)0 she was again upset as she thought everyone should stay a bit longer so she could keep playing with the 20-25 cousins she had just met a few minutes before(the past 5-6 hours)
and all the way home she asked if we could get together with them every weekend all summer ?
oh to be young again !
and the strawberries were great to.
