The Bulk Barn Empty The Bulk Barn

Post by gale force Tue May 14, 2013 10:48 am

Made my first visit to the Bulk Barn today, and picked up two items. Enough baking powder to fill the smaller size canister you find in the grocery store, and the equivalent of a two ounce bottle of oregano. I'm a convert!!! Never again will I buy spices or baking supplies in the grocery store. All that for $1.22 cents.....

I had my conversion just after they first opened. A huge bag of flour, one of icing sugar, and one of cocoa. Plus some other assorted items all for under $20. Quite the deal.

The Bulk Barn Empty Re: The Bulk Barn

My hubby and I are firm believers in shopping at the Bulk Barn for the exact reasons stated above.
Something I didn't know: Baking powder loses it's rising ability if frozen and or becomes stale. I left spices and powders at the cottage and last year wondered why my pie crust was not as flaky as in the past. That would explain it! So, when I only use about a quarter of a cup, the Bulk Barn is an excellent way to use the product and save money. (However, we 'might' lose when hubby stocks up on his 'cheap' treats....)

With two people, I find it hard to get excited about buying "in bulk"

That is the secret you buy what you need, what you can use in a reasonable time. Less waste, and the quality is good too.

I was impressed also with the cleanliness of the store. I've been in their London location and it is not nearly as clean and neat. There wasn't even any dust on the lids of all those bins!!

I like our Bulk Barn because of all the gluten free products they carry! No more going from store to store & cheaper than a health food store. Now I can bake my own gluten free bread which tastes a heck of a lot better than any I have purchased from anywhere of $6 - $8.50 for a loaf half the size of a regular loaf of bread Sad Yes, you can buy cheaper bread at Superstore in the health food section/freezer but ugh it tastes awful!

GF is right on about some BBs being cleaner and better presented than others. But when you find one, it's easy to become addicted. You can purchase as little as a tablespoon of a spice if you wish. So much more economical to purchase a rarely used item this way.

The spices available were the reason I went into the Bulk Barn originally. As Kishgo said, you only have to purchase what you need. This allows me to be a lot more liberal with my selection, and lets me try out some recipes that I otherwise would not.
