... marked the beginning of the first World War. It lasted 4 years.

Why, I wonder, was it called a "world" war? My history from that period is not very good, but it seems to me that it involved a lot of Europe, and then the Commonwealth countries joined in to help - so that could cover Australia, New Zealand and India - as well as North America. But, wasn't most of Asia non-involved in this war? And South America? and Africa?

Sometimes, I think these events get named by the "civilized" or "first world" countries, who used to consider that those "first world" countries pretty much comprised the whole world!
