Canadian courtesy
I'm not sure if my reaction during the last two days while I've been out shopping for groceries is because I've gotten older and less tolerant, or if there really has been a change in courtesy in Canada.
I spend the winters in the US and have gotten accustomed to, shall we say, the lack of manners in some places there. Shopping at yesterday (bad move I guess when the sales for the week started that day) and again today. I didn't hear one person say "Oh, excuse me, or please go ahead" but instead played a type of game I can only call dodge the shopping cart or staff stocking shelves. I even had to politely tell another shopper who was trying to cut in that the waiting line continued somewhere behind me. A belligerent customer in front of me made no bones about being unhappy regarding the handling of a coupon, and was critical of the two people summoned to try and satisfy her. I could hear every word she said and so could the man behind me.
It used to be called "common courtesy". Perhaps it has gone the same way that "common sense" has. What do you think?

From my very limited experience, I have to say that common courtesies as you call them, are more prevalent in FL than in ON, generally. Certainly there are exceptions, but as a general rule, yes.
At the US Publix grocery store, it was UNHEARD of that you might even consider packing your own groceries. (Hee hee...in ON, that's why I ask my hubby to come with me...he packs and I pay!) At Publix, they even offer to take your groceries to your car! No tipping allowed. Really. There are the two of us, "seniors" , quite able bodied and each and every time, we are asked. (Maybe my hubby is the senior, not me!! LOL)
Hubby says this all happens because CDNs are loved for their tourist dollars. Without it, FL would be bankrupt. Perhaps a little cynical but I do believe there is some truth behind that. One furniture store, upon learning that we were CDNs with FL property instantly gave us a 33% discount in addition to the sales price. ( I know, I know, they are still profiting) but non the less, the discount was applied. This happened in three different stores, some more than others, but all offered discounts once learning we had to furnish an entire condo. Would that happen in ON? Not so sure.

As for packing groceries - if FLA they are focusing on a senior consumer group. Namely American and Canadian snowbirds. It makes sense to offer the packing of groceries and also the delivery of them right to your car for that group (maybe not all of them take advantage of it though). Here, however, we haven't got to that point yet - YET! As our population ages I would expect to see our retailers make modification in their retail strategies to greater accommodate the senior population.

Don't get me started on grocery stores. If it wasn't for my wife I's probable be banned form all of them. I would put a big air horn on the cart so people would know I was coming. You don't park your car in the middle of the road so don't park your cart in the middle of the aisle. Every one of those free standing room taking displays would be pushed over, especially the ones at the end of each aisle. The aisles are 2 carts wide but at the end you can barely get one through. OH my poor blood pressure
