1917 - 1st NHL championship game ever played, Toronto Arenas beats Montreal Canadiens 7-3 in 1st of 2 game set (second game on March 13)

1942 - 1st deportation train leaves Paris for Auschwitz Concentration Camp
1947 - Ottawa-born Barbara Ann Scott gets a ticker-tape parade down Bay Street after winning the World Figure Skating Championship; a year later she wins Olympic Gold.
1953 - American B-47 accidentally drops a nuclear bomb on South Carolina, the bomb doesn't go off due to 6 safety catches
1958 - Charles Van Doren finally loses on TV game show "21"
1968 - Otis Redding posthumously received a gold record for the single, (Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay. Redding was killed in a plane crash in Lake Monona in Madison, WI on December 10, 1967. He recorded 11 charted hit songs between 1965 and 1969. Otis Redding was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.
1978 - Bobby Hull of the Winnipeg Jets joined Gordie Howe by getting career goal number 1,000 in a game against the Quebec Nordiques.
1982 - Menachem Begin & Anwar Sadat sign peace treaty in Wash DC
1985 - Mikhail S Gorbachev replaces Konstantin Chernenko as Soviet leader
1987 - Wayne Gretzky scores 1,500th NHL point
1987 - Prime Minister Brian Mulroney holds private meeting with the premiers to brief them on plans to seek a free-trade deal with the US; rejects demands for formal ratification by provinces.
1993 - Janet Reno unanimously confirmed by the Senate to be the first female Attorney General in US history.
1996 - NHL Canadiens beat Dallas Stars 4-1 in the last game played in the 72-year-old Montreal Forum
