Today In Time
1916 - Saskatchewan gives women the provincial vote.
1923 - Pete Parker, of CKCK Radio Regina, does the world's first play-by-play radio broadcast of a professional hockey game, as Edmonton beats Regina 1-0.
1937 - Fred Allen and Jack Benny met on radio in one of the biggest publicity gags ever. It was called, “The Battle of the Century.” The two comedians locked horns in the ballroom of the Hotel Pierre, exchanging torrid insults that were heard by the second largest audience in the history of radio. The ‘feud’, incidentally, lasted for the next 12 years! This was probably the longest-running publicity stunt in history, too!
1958 - The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the first gold record. It was Perry Como’s Catch a Falling Star on RCA Victor Records. The tune became the first to win million-seller certification, though other songs dating as far back as the 1920s may have sold a million records or more. Due to lack of a certification organization like the RIAA, they weren’t awarded the golden platter.
1968 - After two seasons on television, ABC-TV showed the last episode of Batman, starring Adam West and Burt Ward as Robin. The first Batman episode was Hi Diddle Riddle, shown on January 12, 1966.
1971 - Rolling Stones left England for France to escape taxes
1974 - Quebec to make French the official language of the province.
1991 - Emir of Kuwait returns to Kuwait City, after the Iraqis leave
1997 - 68 year old Gordie Howe signs AHL contract with Syracuse Crunch
1997 - Quebec City Chamber of Commerce spends $500,000 for 20-room house formerly used by ex-Premier Jacques Parizeau as an official residence; Lucien Bouchard refused to move in.
