CD989 is finally reporting on the hay shortage in Ontario.

Hay on the way

Thing I find odd is this quote:
"The Mennonite Disaster Services says farmers in the Ottawa Valley are likely the top priority, noting they were the hardest hit in the province."

If they were hit so hard how come a lot of the hay on the hay forums is coming from there? They are trucking it by the transport load from Ottawa to here so how can they say they were hardest hit?

i'm not sure why that is happening.
but one of the girls that works here at nhnh and her hubby grow a lot of hay and this year say's the prices they are being offered has went from around $35 per round bale to $100. per !
seeing a shortage coming they quit selling theirs in early june (they feed stock as well) and are planning on baling the straw(?) from their soybeans as well when harvesting.
she says if they had a set-up to use they would have irrigated this year, but no such luck !

Hay prices have gone nuts. As you mention bales that were $35 are going for $100 or better. Small bales that were $3 are going for upwards of $7. And a lot of the hay is crap.

WE had to buy alfafa cubes at 14/bag to off set shortage ..... we are short 75-100 bales . Lucky we got 300 in the barn of our small acerage

Yeah, our barn where we board is short 100 or so bales. The big round or square bales.
