Decision making - Page 2 1316421266
while i was still working my wife insisted on having new cars, and i submitted to her wishes, so every 5 or so years she got one, but normally they had 200 to 300 thousnd km's on them, and were to the point they were ready for replacement.
the second last one she gave to our son to use while going to college, and he used it for about 14 months afterwards as well.
when given to him it had just a bit over 200,000. on it, and had been well maintained, and he put another 160,000. on it with spotty maintenance.
when i pointed this out to my wife she said it was just a "fluke" that it had lasted that long.
so when we got rid of the next car (sold just sitting in the driveway for about a week)it had near 250,000 km's on it and was sold to our mail lady. at full asking price, as is. but i took it to her mechanic for her as the plates were off of it.
i later was told it cost very little to safety certify, and do the "e" test.
she continued on driving that car we sold to her for about 3 years on the mail route !
i don't know how many km's that she put on it but mail routes are considered as one ofthe worst jobs for a vehicle, so many stops, poor road conditions, bad weather(with some good). but upon bringing this to my rides attention, while car (van actually), i was dismissed from the group making the decision, and told where to travel to and at what speed to get there !
so i do think if maintained well,if being a quality vehicle, trading to soon is sommething to reconsider!
but i always was accused of being cheap about replacing my trucks, and had one i drove until it had a million 600 thousand miles on it !

:I'm sorry:

My 13 year old car has 69000km on it, a far cry from the usual 250000km or more on a vehicle of that age. Another reason I figure it is better to just hang on to what I have.

have it properly serviced, and rust proofed everyfall, and don't park it on the grass if it can be avoided, and it should last for a long time !

(parking on grassy areas promotes rust on the undercarriage, almost as much as road salt!
i don't know why, but it do's do it.)

I've pretty much decided to trade my car in at the dealership. I've pretty much decided which car I want to buy. I've tried to do a comparison between two vehicles and they are somewhat similar in looks and style, but drive totally differently. After the Genessis recommendation, I went to the Hyundai dealership here in Simcoe. That model is over and above what I'm looking for but another caught my eye and imagination - and besides Kishgo, the salesman said I looked good in it!!!!! lol! Also, Growler, I used your tactics of checking prices in AutoTrader, and when asked what price I wanted as tradein value, I was able to reply with a somewhat precise figure - so thank you again.

So just out if curiousity, why do ppl buy new? Most gently used come half price and with warranty. If it's like my car it still smells of new leather inside and I haven't had one mechanical problem with it? It was 1/3 of the price as new - 2 years old - 24 ,000 ks on it and spotless. I have now had it for 4 years and it is polesa and I will just about get all of mu money back if
I want o sell it and get another one from the auction again.

So, why buy new and spend the extra?

Speaking just for myself, I think it is the warranty provided with the car. Knowing that if something is not right, back you go to the dealership without the worry about the cost of getting it fixed.

I looked at that model Retired2 but decided against it when I was told the story of the kind hearted hubby who went out in the winter and started his wife's care for her before going on the work. The wife came out, proceeded to drive to an appointment in Hamilton, but on her arrival found that she was stranded. Hubby still had the key fob in his pocket!! lol!

There are 2 fob's and my wife never takes hers out of her purse and of course never goes anywhere without her purse so no problem there. Of course if the car was running it should have been locked and she would not be able the get in without a fob.. Not really any different then people who lock their keys in the car. My wife did that a couple of times

Yes, I pick up my new car on Tuesday! I decided to go with a smaller car, not a compact but not what I would call midsize either. I was looking for better gas mileage in city/town driving, because that is where I do almost all of my driving. After listening to family who have recently purchased that type of car, I narrowed my focus between the Hyundai and Kia models. I test drove 3 different Kia models, and two Hyundai - made my decision between the models of each and went to talk with the salesman and his manager. With written quotes from both dealerships, with the exception of the tradein value for my car, there was not a great deal of difference in the bottom line.
Deciding that I liked the "feel" of the Hyundai and felt like there was still some protection surrounding me when I was in the car, I picked a Hyunda Elantra GLS.
They also offered the larger tradein value for my present car!! After all, I am a frugal person! Can't wait to get it!

Any yes Kishgo, I do love the advice that is available here on the forum. When you stop and think of the people who contribute to the forum, their different lives, experiences and wisdom; I feel very grateful to be able to have access to all that.

I had commented to the Kia salesman about the similarities, and he told that. And please don't mention apples to me. I have just finished making applesauce and three apple pies - I don't want to look at another apple for a while. At least not until I have a slice of the pie. Chuckle

Everything you make sounds mouth watering. Do you freeze your pies?

On another note, I simply love this forum. It's the perfect place for me to feel connected with the world and my former home town area. I love the suggestions, advice and thoughtful commentary. Thanks everyone!!
