Looking for advice on virus software......
So.....I'm wondering what everyone else is using and what works for you?
I've been using Norton for as long as I can remember but continuously cringe at the idea of spending $50+ every year for virus protection. I'll need to renew my protection in a couple of months so I thought I'd ask around and see what other people are using....where they're getting the best deals etc etc.
Any advice/ideas would be greatly appreciated!

$50 is pretty much the norm for anti virus. You can go with a free anti virus such as AVG or Microsoft Security Essentials which can do the job quite well. I would say anti virus has become more like a flu shot. Good insurance but not 100%. Virus are so fast changing today that AV software has trouble keeping up. No matter the protection you will eventually get a virus. I would say go with what you know and trust even if it is Norton again.
Of course you can also lock your computer down beyond just anti virus but then you have to balance security vs convenience. My computer is locked down tight but every thing I do on the internet requires a couple of more steps. I don't just click on a website and have it pop up but rather click on it then I determine what I wish to allow. Takes longer but ends up being safer.

I use MSE, McAfee free and spybot. They all seem to live together quite nicely without causing problems between each other or slowing down my computer.

Re: Looking for advice on virus software......
I've been using Avast Anti-Virus which is a free download and I've had no problems with it whatever...it automatically updates itself several times a day. I also use Malwarebytes for malware protection. I recommend both programmes. I too used Norton for a long time but stopped for two reasons; one was the cost factor and the other was that I found it seemed to take too much control away from me. I find Avast effective and non-intrusive, and of course as I said before FREE.

We used Norton and changed because of cost and the fact that some viruses still got through. Now we use AVG and Malwarebytes, both free and have not had a single issue. (Thanks Rustee!)
