Overnight Flights
Did you hear about the Air Canada flight where several passengers were injured last fall?
Apparently, the co-pilot, on an overnight flight, to Europe, I think, had a nap (which is allowed). But, the pilot allowed him to sleep 1/2 hr. longer than he was supposed to. When they guy woke and took over the controls, he mistook the planet Venus(?) for an aircraft, and dove to avoid a collision, thereby injuring passengers and crew who were thrown to the ceiling.
It seems that 45 mins. will allow you to get refreshed without allowing you to reach deep sleep, from which it is much more difficult to awake without being groggy!
Gives one pause about taking overnight flights anywhere! Is anybody in the cockpit really wide awake?

Re: Overnight Flights
And, the majority of the folks that were hurt we NOT wearing their seat belts! Why? Can't be any more prominent than to tell passengers EVERY flight that they need to wear their seat belts even when the seatbelt light is off!!!!
As for the pilot resting, those flight are very long. Would rather one rested pilot than 2 tired ones. Best of a worst evil, I guess.

I agree with you RT. A rested pilot is better than one who needs tons of coffee to stay awake. Just in case of course.

Re: Overnight Flights
Seems there's now going to be a class action law suit against Air Canada - because of the cover-up of what actually happened. They blamed it on turbulence - rather than pilot error.
