Daily Planet Empty Daily Planet

Post by observer Tue Apr 17, 2012 5:09 pm

Last night on Daily Planet, there was a piece on "Norfolk County" where they were using this immense machine that was computer controlled - and was guided in to snag a large pine tree - cut it and shear the branches, and then measure and cut it into logs. This was presented as clearing the pines that were planted long ago to rejuvenate Norfolk's sand plains, and now make room for the hardwood forest to grow.

Does anyone have any idea WHERE in Norfolk County this might be happening?

Not totally "computer" controlled, a lot depends on the operator.
Sold programmable controllers to one really big manufacturer of these machines. They are kind of an industrial computer, sort of,with display screens to help the operator.
Amazing to see these things work up close.

BTW - yes, retired, I think CLARK KENT worked at the Daily Planet.

But, have you ever watched the show - on Discovery channel? They do have some interesting programs about "things natural" - and/or scientific.

And slowfood - do you have any idea, then, where this tree harvesting might have been being done in Norfolk? One assumes it must have been down along the lake front area somewhere.

These machines usually are used on softwoods, for faster pulpwood harvesting. There are many reforestation plots that are mature now. Based on that, south central to south west areas of the county
