Government Budgets
Will any of the new budget items affect you?
Will you miss the penny?

Re: Government Budgets
hi al,good to see you, or to be right , hi ob,
i was thinking about the penny a bit recently, as on the history channel website they sell pennies from 1862-1865 i think it is (the civil war years) for around $40. each !
someone obviously hoarded them (family) and when they seen the interest in history blossom, decided to sell them !
far more than inters (%) would have paid !
maybe we should do that now !
and i'll miss it !

Re: Government Budgets
What about the Ontario government freezing salaries of public sector workers? Will that lead to labour unrest? OR - if it does, does it matter?
And the federal government say they're going to reduce the amount of Employment Insurance that people who live in high unemployment areas receive. They want them to move to where the jobs are. Will this affect Norfolk? Are we a high unemployment area?

Re: Government Budgets
As populations grow government grows with it. At some point government goes from lean and mean to bloated. The bloat is always harder to get rid of since the government does not see the bloat as a problem.
The penny has served us well and I think it is time for it to go. Problem is everyone will be looking for ways to get a little extra out of it leaving. How best to price stuff to have the round up go their way.

Re: Government Budgets
If you use credit or debit there will be not difference. Also everything is always $1.99, never $1.96 so it will round up most times unless you buy 4 at $1.99 then the total would be $7.96 and rounded down

Re: Government Budgets
At $7.96 would it not still round up? Rounding down only works if it is 4 cents or less?
Re: Government Budgets
I thought 6 & 7 would round down and 8 & 9 would round up

So, did anything in the budget annoy you - or did you think it seemed like "much ado about nothing"?

I guess it would.
Re: Government Budgets
The "pundits" are saying that it was a budget favouring big business - particularly the energy sector. By contrast, they say that allowing these mega projects to proceed (in the energy sector) - with ONE review (of environmental issues etc) and one ONLY - is a slam against the environmentalists.

I guess that our members either agree with everything that came down in the budgets - OR - they just figure you gotta accept what you gotta accept!

Re: Government Budgets
Really matters very little whether people like it or not. Bottom line is the politicians lay down the law and we have no choice. Oh wait. We can vote another party in next election and have them do the same thing. Kinda pointless is it not?
Re: Government Budgets
well considering where the economy and everything is, it is not nearly as bad as it could have been !
i would have cut more than what they did !
but just like the oas, they could have just changed it to 67 effective right now, and not given people time to put a bit more away !
and the penny is costing 11 million more than it's worth every year, so dump it !
but then i'm not to smart,if i was i'd have a bit of money ?

Re: Government Budgets
Question is did they cut from the right places? Has it not been stated in other places that the current Ontario government is the most bloated one to day? I am sure there are a lot pf places internally they could have cut that would have gone unnoticed to the general public but would have shaved money off the deficit.
Re: Government Budgets
I don't think there has ever been a budget brought down that the other parties have said "WOW what a great budget, we will vote for it" The opposition will run it down even if it was exactly the same budget they would have presented.

From my teaching days, I would say that this is correct.

Re: Government Budgets
It is correct. But with the nickel still in play it makes 5 a number you can round up and down to.
