i checked on my deleted file,(yesterday's headlines get deleted?)and it say's gene autry's version sold over 2,000,000. copies but don't mention if it was him singing it in '47.
it was wrote as a theme song for montgomery ward stores. the author wrote a quite a few christmasy song but made enough in royalties etc. from rudolph to live off of them until he died in '78.
some of his songs : "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (1958) and "A Holly Jolly Christmas" (1962) in addition to "Rudolph." In 1947
