AVG Internet Security
I have been using AVG for years, all for free but now I have a screen that tells me in order to keep this, I now have to purchase it. Anyone else have the same message?

Re: AVG Internet Security
I used AVG for years but changed about a year ago to MSE. A lot of others have also. I have had no issues with it. It is put out by Microsoft.

Yes. AVG is free and has always served us well. Recommended by Rustee on this forum (Howard Bint) years ago and it has never let us down.

Re: AVG Internet Security
You should still be able to get AVG for free. They push the paid one and do make the free version hard to find and download.
Re: AVG Internet Security
Yes, AVG is still available for FREE, but you gotta find it. If you go to google and type in "free AVG version download" (no quote marks) I think you will find it. You still need to fight to get the free version, but it is still there. Use the word "version", as a FREE "download" may not get it. Free download don't mean the same as free version.
We have gone with MSSE also ... it don't have a paid version, so it don't push you to buy theirs.

Re: AVG Internet Security
I decided to download MSSE as well. Worked just fine! Do I still need Spybot and Malware?

Re: AVG Internet Security
Yes i use all 3. You should delete AVG as it might cause problems with MSE.
I also use McAfeesite advisor which helps to keep you from going to bad websites. It stopped me just this morning from going to a site that came in a email. It does not slow down my computer one bit

Re: AVG Internet Security
Okay, so I downloaded MSE and uninstalled AVG. Now I have note from Windows saying my Virus Protection is off. Should I be concerned?
Also, I have switched to Firefox. Do I need to uninstall IE?
Thank goodness for this forum and all the experience and advice. You guys never cease to amaze me.

Re: AVG Internet Security
Hi Kishgo ... yep ... keep all 3. When you downloaded MSSE, did you do the setup? If not, you are not protected. Setup lets you pick a time for the scan to run, what you want to do when it finds a virus (remove) and other settings.
No need to uninstall IE, just when you use either one, it will tell you if it's not your default and ask you if you want to make it the default ... click yes and that will be the one that opens if you try to open a program that needs it. You may find that sometimes the default may not open something and using the other one is easy to do.
Hope all is well with you. Are you back to your winter home now?

Re: AVG Internet Security
Is your computer on at 2 in the morning.??? I shut mine off at bedtime. Go into the program and hit the update button and do a manual update to get started. Mine will say not protected if I fire up the computer late/after the update time in the morning. Should do the update daily, you won't even know its doing it.

Re: AVG Internet Security
Best thing you can do for your computer kishgo IMO! It costs about 4 cents to keep the computer on and saves a surge when you turn it back on. A power suppy runs about $65. ... that is a lot of nights at 4 cents.
Mine is never off either ... except when bad storms are coming ...

Re: AVG Internet Security
I did the update again and now the shield that was in the DAD bar is gone! Also, I changed the scan to take place every day at 2 AM.
Looks like you've both steered me in the right direction. Many thanks to the two Rs!
