Changes at Oakwood Cemetery
I went up to the cemetery this past weekend and was not happy to see what has taken place at the south boundary between the cemetery line and the new housing development. All established trees/ bushes and fencing have been removed and are currently being replaced with a line of spruce seedlings that appear to be about 6 inches high. I made some phone calls and was told that a chain link fence will be constructed sometime in the fall. My concern is that - at present- the cemetery is open and vulnerable to vandalism and/or motorized traffic in the form of ATVs and dirt bikes. If you have loved ones in this area of Oakwood, you may want to have a look and make a few calls for yourself. I'm not sure that waiting for "fall fencing" is a wise decision.

Re: Changes at Oakwood Cemetery
My whole family has a bone to pick with whoever is running the cemetery now. They ripped out bushes that had been next to my grandparents stone for over 30 years and never asked to do it. When questioned why they said the roots were lifting the stone. First of they were not and secondly if they were then how did the get them out without lifting the stone further. They also tore out the flower bed planted in front of my parents stone taking the edging bricks for themselves. And also complained were were not using a proper fence yet there are three stones within spitting distance of my parents using the exact same fence to this day years later yet ours had to be removed.
So honestly we are no longer surprised if stupid things that make no sense are done at Oakwood since it appears whomever is running it is a moron. Sorry for the harsh words but they are true.

From first hand experience, don't complain about the cemetery doing things you don't like if you are not 100% complying with the regulations. Childish or not, they throw that you - this happened to us (not from a Simcoe cemetery).
Second, why do they need to get your permission to take out a hedge of trees! I am not sure of the contract, but does it state that permission must be given to make changes that the management board has deemed to be necessary? Does a rental tenant have a right to tell the landlord that they can not pave their lane way or trim their trees? Not being insensitive, but I do not see the logic behind getting your " permission" first. If they had to have everyone's permission I would think that would be very difficult to do? Some are dead, some have changed addresses, some won't acknowledge the request, etc?

Re: Changes at Oakwood Cemetery
Four plots with near identical fencing within 50 feet yet only ours is not up to standards. If all four were removed fine. But 1 of 4? Little odd to me. As for the grandparents bushes cemetery says flags were placed there stating they were to be removed yet my aunt and cousin both say no flags were present before removal. Again, little odd. As for the rental tenant argument they can suggest it not be paved or a tree trimmed. Landlord can choose to agree or do what they want. Everyone has a right to make a suggestion as does everyone have the right to ignore it.

spid i wouldn't bet money on this renter thing !
the way it is now, with the rental review board and all, the renter has more rights than the property owner !
one of my former neighbors tried to have a tenant evicted, after being there for a few years,as he no longer want to have a tenant, so he told him a year before that he wanted him to leave,(by registered mail) and the guy hired a lawyer, they had a hearing, and the board said as long as the rent was kept up to date the renter could stay.
so to not have anymore tenants he sold his home and moved to langton.
then the new owner was allowed to evict the guy !
but all of my family is buried in kirkwal, behind the church, and all they ever do is expand the cemetary.
they keep it up very well though !
