Three confirmed dead after train derails in Burlington, Ont.
BURLINGTON, Ont. - The mayor of Burlington, Ont., says three people are dead after a Via train derailment.
Rick Goldring says emergency crews are working to pull other passengers from the wreckage and at least one air ambulance is on standby.
The train came off the tracks at Plains Road and King Road near Aldershot station this afternoon.
Via spokeswoman Michelle Lamarche says 75 people were on board the train travelling from Niagara Falls, Ont., to Toronto.
Goldring says the crash has caused minor damage to nearby buildings.
Police haven't released any details.
GO Transit says its trains are turning back at Burlington.

Re: Burlington train wreck
The train derailment is literally less than five minutes from us. We've been hearing the helicopters all afternoon, to the point where even our dog was looking up at the sky.
Weather conditions are obviously not a factor. However, I can't help but wonder if all the construction around the tracks was a factor. An overpass is being built to alleviate the traffic congestion when the trains pass by painfully slow to change tracks. Not unusual to wait 15 min. or more, depending on the length of the train.
It's now almost 7:30 and we can still hear helicopters but not to the same frequency. Sure hope there are no other deaths. Three is too many.
Thanks for thinking of me rbw!

The helicopters are back this morning. Probably news reporters. Heard a train go by with a long soft whistle, quite likely a salute to their fallen friends.

Re: Burlington train wreck
We only know what we read in the newspapers. However......lots of speculation going on.
For those of you who aren't familiar with the area, the exact location of the accident is the same location for the construction of an overpass, similar to the one Simcoe used to have for the CNR lines. It is a mess! Some have speculated that perhaps during the excavating etc, the rails may have shifted. Others ponder if vandals placed rocks/debris on the rails, the opinion coming from an interview from one who was riding the train. He said it felt as if the train ran over something and sort of pushed/crushed something on the rails. Weather cannot be counted in at all and thank goodness the weather was fairly mild and not blizzardly! Others have wondered if the changing of the tracks was a reason and perhaps the timing was off.
According to a news report I heard, it could take up to a YEAR to determine the cause. I certainly hope not!

Re: Burlington train wreck
Seems like they also recovered the black box. Whether it has any information that could help who knows.
Re: Burlington train wreck
Did you know the 'black' box is really orange??

Re: Burlington train wreck
I know the black box on a PLANE is orange - so I suppose it likely would be on a train also.
Weird, isn't it, why it was ever called a "BLACK" box?

Because saying they recovered the little orange box just doesn't have the cool mystery like recovering the black box!

From google:
"Black box is a technical term for a device or system or object when it is viewed primarily in terms of its input and output characteristics.
In other words, it's kind of a generic term that really has nothing to do with the actual color of the box."
Orange would make it easier to find!

Re: Burlington train wreck
Thanks kishgo, for looking that up - BUT, still have trouble with WHY the term was coined; even though I agree with spid that black box has that "eerie" feeling to it - where orange box might tend to make you laugh or something!

I sat beside a man in the plane, all dressed in black, good looking too, but the white collar on his shirt calmed me down instantly. No more mystery!

Re: Burlington train wreck
DAMN! - That happens all too often!
No - maybe it used to - but I don't think it happens that often any more. The decline in the Catholic clergy would suggest that you should have your glasses checked before you make comments like: "Good looking too". LOL

Re: Burlington train wreck
I'm not so sure he was Catholic. He wore a hat that could be described as monk like, a very expensive suit and long top coat, one gold ring with diamonds on his left hand and a beeeautiful large black topaz on his right hand, deep rich voice and very good looking! I checked him out as we waited at the departing gate. Just good luck he sat next to me.
I know, I know, I'm happily married but hubby and I agree that we can both look but not touch!
